Examining the advantages of a designer community membership

Post by Irenekbug »

My journey into showcasing creative work took an unexpected turn last year. What I attempted initially was a generic gallery site that lacked proper focus. That approach barely got me any real engagement from designers. A big lesson was how important it is to show work in its intended setting.

I found a useful article on exactly this problem at https://dribbble.com/.

After shifting to a more focused approach my portfolio traffic tripled within weeks. Explaining the reasoning behind design decisions made a huge difference for viewers. A common mistake was keeping old student projects alongside professional work. Trimming the fat turned out to be the single best edit I performed.

Three friends in the field gave me honest opinions on which pieces held up. What they emphasized was the need for storytelling around each piece. That feedback turned my portfolio from a gallery into a narrative.

Now my page contains just a handful of pieces yet every visit leads to a conversation. Ditching the complex animations made the content itself easier to evaluate. A simple tip is to review your work as if you were a stranger seeing it first.
