Understanding Ohm's Law in Modern Vaping

To the uninitiated, the numbers printed on the side of a replacement coil—0.2Ω, 0.8Ω, 1.2Ω—might look like gibberish. However, for those of us in the industry, these numbers tell the entire story of how a device will perform. Paradise Vape & Smoke Shop operates on the principle that understanding electrical resistance is the key to curating your perfect vape experience. It is all based on Ohm's Law, and the relationship between resistance, power, and heat.

Resistance, measured in Ohms, measures how difficult it is for electricity to pass through the coil. A lower number (Sub-Ohm, or under 1.0Ω) means there is very little resistance. Electricity flows through freely and rapidly, generating massive amounts of heat. This requires more battery power (wattage) and vaporizes a larger volume of e-liquid instantly. This is the domain of "Direct Lung" (DL) vaping. It produces those dense, room-filling clouds and intense flavor warmth, but it burns through juice and battery life quickly.

Conversely, a higher number (Plus-Ohm, or above 1.0Ω) means high resistance. The electricity struggles to get through, meaning the wire heats up more slowly and gently. This setup requires far less wattage. This is the domain of "Mouth to Lung" (MTL) vaping, which mimics the tight draw and cooler temperature of a cigarette. It produces discrete wisps of vapor and is optimized for high-strength nicotine salts.

Safety is a critical component of this equation that is often overlooked. Lower resistance coils draw significantly more amperage from the battery. If you are using an external battery device, it is imperative to use high-quality, high-drain batteries from reputable manufacturers like Sony, Samsung, or LG. Using a low-amp battery with a 0.15Ω coil can stress the cell, leading to venting or failure. The industry standard is to always check your battery's "Continuous Discharge Rating" (CDR) to ensure it can handle the load your coil demands.

The industry has seen a shift toward "mesh" coils which manipulate this surface area even further, but the rule of thumb remains. If you put a 0.2Ω coil in your tank, you need to open your airflow and crank your wattage to 70W+. If you try to vape that like a cigarette, it will get too hot and likely leak.

When you visit a Vape Shop Morrow, knowing your preferred resistance allows you to buy the right consumables for your device.
